Why your support matters

Asthma is a major health condition affecting both children and adults and remains the leading cause of disease burden among children.

In 2022 to 2023 alone, 13,500 children under 15 were hospitalised for asthma, and more than 26,500 visited an emergency department because of their symptoms.

Asthma places a heavy burden on families, hospitals and the Australian health system. But with the right care, education and follow-up support, many of these visits don’t have to happen. In fact, many asthma hospitalisations are potentially preventable with optimised care.

By supporting new researchers and new ideas, we can develop better ways to prevent hospital visits and improve asthma care for everyone.

you are supporting new research

Your donations are helping support future leaders in asthma research, people with the ideas, skills and passion to change how asthma is understood and managed. Your support is helping create hope for a better tomorrow.

Because of you, we can fund research scholarships and help talented, up and coming researchers build their careers and develop solutions that improve the lives of people with asthma. These scholarships give emerging researchers the time, resources and support they need to turn new ideas into real world improvements in asthma care.

Through your support, Dr Ryan Mackle received an Asthma Australia scholarship to carry out vital research focused on children with asthma living in rural and remote areas. Research like Dr Mackle's, play a vital role in our ambition to halve preventable asthma hospitalisations by 2030.

What this research achieved

With your support, Dr Mackle and his research team developed and tested the Asthma Care from Home model, designed to support children living in rural and regional New South Wales after an asthma-related hospital visit. The Asthma Care from Home project provided nearly 200 children and their families who’d been to an Emergency Department because of their asthma with an asthma information pack, online resources and text reminders to follow up with their GP. Those with poorly controlled asthma were also offered a virtual home visit with a paediatric nurse to talk through symptoms, triggers at home and any concerns after leaving hospital.

The research delivered strong, measurable outcomes:

  • 69% fewer emergency department visits
  • 81% fewer hospital stays
  • 73% lower costs

Information Packs & Resources

  • Tailored asthma action plans
  • An asthma and your child educational booklet
  • A tailored letter for the GP and school/childcare outlining their child's specific asthma needs and asthma management tips
  • Access to online webinars and multimedia resources
Researchers showed that this model of care gives families in remote areas access to the information and care they need. It improved families’ knowledge of asthma and helped them feel more confident managing asthma at home. This led to better use of asthma medications and resulted in fewer hospital visits.

You made a difference

Funding of this research project helped to deliver improvements in asthma symptoms and quality of life compared to the 12 months prior to enrolment in this research project.  Results also show that the program is highly cost effective resulting in a 73% reduction in cost. The cost effectiveness and lasting improvements seen in this project show why this model of care is critical for children in regional and rural communities living with asthma, with both families and health professionals keen to see it continue.

Expanding digital tools and building this approach into nurses’ everyday work will help make the program sustainable long term, so more children with asthma can stay well and out of hospital. There is also strong potential to expand this program across rural Australia.

By funding research scholarships, supporters just like you have:

  • Encouraged emerging researchers to build careers in asthma research.
  • Helped remote families get access to vital information and support.
  • Helped new ideas and information reach families who need it most.
  • Drove evidence-based solutions that reduced emergency visits and hospital stays.
  • Created hope for families today, through better care and fewer hospital visits.

Looking Beyond 2030

A cure for asthma will take time.

But every breakthrough, every proven model of care and every supported researcher brings us closer to halving preventable asthma hospitalisations by 2030 and building a future where more people can live well with asthma.

Your generosity is helping shape this future of asthma care, supporting people living with asthma today and the researchers working towards better outcomes for tomorrow.

The need for new research projects and the support of researchers in developing new asthma management practices is ongoing and is vital in improving the lives of people with asthma. Thank you for your wonderful support.
