I’m doing a challenge to raise funds for Asthma Australia
For as long as I can remember, asthma has been a part of my life.
Growing up, I was constantly moving between different medications, hoping each new one would be the answer. Many of these treatments were steroid-based, bringing their own side effects alongside the benefits. Eventually, the medications would stop working, and I would find myself starting the cycle all over again. There was never a cure—just temporary relief from the symptoms.
Like many people with asthma, I was often told that I would "grow out of it." But asthma isn't a childhood condition that simply disappears for everyone. It affects every person differently, and for many of us, it remains a lifelong challenge.
Everything changed during COVID. After catching the virus twice, my asthma became significantly worse. Following my second infection, I could barely walk up a flight of stairs without becoming breathless. Holding a conversation was difficult. Any increase in my heart rate would trigger severe chest pain. Running 100 metres felt impossible.
Despite how much my symptoms had changed, I often felt unheard. I was repeatedly told to use my inhalers more often, but they no longer worked. Instead, they left me shaking without providing any real relief.
Being referred to a respiratory specialist was life-changing. After undergoing a qualification process, I was approved for an injectable treatment for severe asthma. That treatment has transformed my life.
Today, I can run. I can swim. I can ride a bike. I can laugh without worrying about losing my breath. Most importantly, I feel capable in my body again.
Because of my journey, I understand firsthand how serious asthma can be and how often it is misunderstood. Asthma is frequently viewed as a common condition that affects everyone the same way, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Every person's experience is different, and many people continue to struggle without knowing that other treatment options may exist.
That's why I've set myself a challenge: I am training to compete in a triathlon in March 2027 while raising funds for Asthma Australia.
This challenge represents something I once thought would never be possible. Every training session is a reminder of how far I've come and why supporting asthma research, education, and advocacy matters so much.
I'm getting active to help Asthma Australia achieve their purpose of helping people breathe so they can live freely.
One in every nine Australians is directly impacted by asthma, and far too many people with asthma end up in hospital every year. By supporting my fundraising challenge, you'll be helping improve the lives of the 2.8 million Australians living with asthma.
Your donation will support groundbreaking research, provide evidence-based services and programs, and deliver education and training for people living with asthma and their families.
Most importantly, you'll be helping us move closer to a future where asthma no longer limits lives—and where one day, a cure may finally exist.
Thank you for your generosity and support. Together, we can create a community free from asthma.
All donations over $2 are tax-deductible.
