Aleta knew something wasn’t right with her two and a half-year-old son’s breathing. Despite repeated doctor visits, she was told he might “grow out of it.”
Searching for answers, she contacted Asthma Australia, where an Asthma Educator explained how asthma presents in young children and showed her the correct way to use her son’s medication.
The difference was astounding. Within weeks, his coughing fits stopped and the blue puffer they had relied on was no longer needed.
“Our nights are quieter,” Aleta says. “I feel confident, not just as a mum, but as someone who understands what’s happening and how to respond.”
Sounds like you made life safer
Thank you for being part of our community. And, for showing your generosity at a time that matters. With the help of wonderful supporters like you, our 2026 Tax Appeal raised more than $112,300.
That means more support when it’s needed, more care available and more awareness of just how serious asthma is.
At a time when cost of living pressures continue to affect so many Australians, we are incredibly grateful for every donation and every act of support.
Because of you, it’s becoming harder for people and policy makers to dismiss asthma as ‘just’ asthma. Your support is helping fund projects that increase awareness of the seriousness of asthma, provide vital support to people living with asthma, and invest in research that will improve care and bring us closer to a cure.
Earlier this year, we shared with you the deeply personal stories of Kelly, Julie, Natalie and Kristy, who bravely shared the heartbreak of losing loved ones Mitchell, Matty, Savanna and Ned to asthma.
Together, we are helping to send the important message that asthma is not ‘just’ asthma. Every day, asthma impacts the lives of thousands of Australians and their families.
But because of you, we can keep pushing for change. Your support is helping Asthma Australia be a powerful voice for people living with asthma, and work towards a future where fewer families experience the heartbreak of losing someone they love.
Because of you, we can keep pushing for change.
Thank you for helping us move closer to that important vision.
We're here to listen
When we shared Mitchell’s story, families across Australia reached out to share stories of loved ones they had lost to asthma.
Some losses were recent. Others happened many years ago. Yet every message carried the same heartbreaking truth, asthma is not ‘just’ asthma. It’s serious. People’s willingness to share these deeply personal stories
showed that the message is resonating and helping more
Australians recognise the seriousness of asthma.
These are just a few of the messages shared on social media by families and friends honouring loved ones taken too soon.
she needs to breathe
Did you know that women account for 61% of Australian adults living with asthma and are more than twice as likely to die from asthma each year compared to men? Yet asthma has rarely been recognised as a women’s health issue.
“Asthma is rarely discussed in routine women’s health conversations. That’s why
awareness is everything.”
Liz Ellis AO
Together, we are working to change that. A key part of our advocacy is ensuring governments, health professionals and the wider community better understand the unique challenges women face throughout different stages of life.
Earlier this year, Asthma Australia brought together parliamentarians, health experts, researchers and people living with asthma at Parliament House in Canberra to shine a spotlight on this often- overlooked issue.
That advocacy has now grown into the national She Needs to Breathe campaign, launched in June to help women better understand the connection between asthma and hormonal life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause.
While there is still much work to do, this is an important step towards putting asthma firmly on Australia’s women’s health agenda and ensuring more women receive the care and support they deserve.
Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, businesses, trusts and foundations, grants and government support, Asthma Australia can be a strong voice for people living with asthma and advocate for change where it is needed most.
You Can leave the loudest legacy
By leaving a gift in your Will to Asthma Australia, you can help ensure that people living with asthma continue to receive support, advocacy and hope for generations to come. Your generosity will echo through the lives of millions of Australians, helping secure a future where nobody dies from asthma.
For Shirley, leaving a gift in her Will was a deeply personal decision. Having seen the impact of asthma on her family, she wanted to help create a better future for others. Research into the causes of asthma and finding ways to prevent it were especially important to Shirley.
Her father and brother both lived with asthma, but it was watching her brother struggle with the condition that inspired her to leave a gift in her Will.
“It was very difficult as a child watching my brother. I remember one time he was just about turning blue because of asthma,” Shirley says.
Through her gift, Shirley’s compassion and generosity will touch the lives of people living with asthma for years to come.

NEARLY 50,000 FAMILIES ACCESSED ASTHMA SUPPORT BECAUSE OF YOU
Asthma is one of the leading reasons children are admitted to hospital in Australia. Investment in asthma research has helped uncover the challenges faced by people living with asthma and identify new ways to improve support and care.
New research conducted by Asthma Australia found that while many parents feel confident managing their child’s asthma, nearly twothirds live with an ongoing fear of their child experiencing an asthma attack.
This insight is helping shape programs and resources that support families when they need it most. With the right support, information and asthma management, many asthma attacks can be prevented.
To help address this need, a three year initiative was established to give parents the knowledge and confidence to better manage their child’s asthma and asthma-like symptoms.
At the heart of this initiative is the Attack Asthma campaign, which connects families with trusted information, practical resources and support.
Through the campaign, parents were encouraged to check how well their child’s asthma was controlled, access practical resources and connect with an Asthma Educator through the 1800 ASTHMA information line for trusted information and support.
Every family deserves the confidence that comes from knowing how to manage asthma well. Initiatives like Attack Asthma are empowering families to take control of asthma and helping more children stay healthy, active and out of hospital.
YOU ARE INVESTING IN BETTER BREATHING. THANKS FOR HEARING US
Thanks to your generosity, Asthma Australia is able to support researchers working to improve asthma care, strengthen treatments and ultimately move closer to a cure.
Your gifts are helping talented researchers investigate some of the most pressing challenges facing people living with asthma today. In Australia, women are more likely to die from asthma than men, yet there is still much we do not understand about how best to support them.
Many women face unique and complex challenges when managing their asthma, including caring responsibilities, financial pressures, other health conditions, and barriers in accessing healthcare.
One researcher asking the important questions around women’s asthma is Dr Stephen Hughes.
Through his research, Dr Hughes is working directly with women living with asthma to better understand their experiences and identify how healthcare services can provide more meaningful, effective and tailored support.
By listening to women and learning from their lived experiences, this research has the potential to improve asthma care for thousands of Australian women.
Your support is helping make this work possible, and helping ensure more people can live well with asthma. Research like this gives hope for better asthma management, improved treatments and ultimately, a cure.
This is your impact in action. Thank you for standing with people living with asthma and helping fund the research that will change lives.
YOU’VE MADE A RESOUNDING DIFFERENCE
Because of your support, more Australians can access trusted asthma information, receive guidance to better manage their condition and gain the confidence to take control of their asthma health.
THANK YOU!
Your generosity helps fuel vital advocacy, education and research, ensuring people with asthma, their families and carers can access support when they need it most.
Over the past year, thousands of Australians turned to Asthma Australia for information and support. Schools and educators also accessed asthma first aid training, helping create safer environments for children living with asthma.
This wouldn’t have been possible without you.
