My Activity Tracking

I have completed

of my 50 km other goal.

My target 50 km

I’m getting breathless for asthma!

I’m challenging myself to 10 days straight of fitness activity because, unlike people with asthma I can breathe easily. I want to stand with them and really experience what it’s like, even just for a moment, to struggle to breathe.

  • Asthma is responsible for at least 1 Australian death every day and around 100 hospitalisations every day. Over 80% of these hospitalisations are considered potentially avoidable.
  • 1 in 9 Australians are directly impacted by asthma, with children being the most impacted.

You can show your support by using the Donate button. Your support will fund ground-breaking research and provide free support programs and services to the asthma community, like 1800 ASTHMA. A telephone information support service that receives around 20 calls a day from people with asthma and their carers.

“An Asthma Educator really changed my life. I have never in my life been more well than I am now, due to that call I made to Asthma Australia. Can’t recommend them highly enough. I learned more in that 40 minute chat than I have in my lifetime.”

Day 7

Saturday 7th Sep
Yesterday I was feeling great and managed 5kms running non-stop. I felt on top of the world!!
And today my sore throat and snotty face have returned and I struggled with 1km. Apparently my body needs rest. Weird.
So anyway, walked a slow 4kms with 2 x 1kms jogs intermittently.
Now to try that rest thing.

Day 5

Thursday 5th Sep
Day 3 was difficult - I got my 5kms but it was pretty much in 1km increments. Day 4 was spent in bed, which may explain why day 3 was so difficult.
Today is day 5 - I’m feeling better than the last two days so should crack the 5kms ok, and will attempt to add an extra couple to make up for some lost kms on day 4.

Yikes

Monday 2nd Sep
Well. This is a lot harder than I expected.
I’ve not run distance in a loooooong time so I’m really struggling! I guess that’s the point of the challenge though, isn’t it? I have to work hard for those dollars you’ve kindly donated.
I promise you, I am!!

Day 1!

Sunday 1st Sep
Alright! So today marks day 1 of the hug and puff challenge to raise funds towards asthma research.
My goal is to run - not walk - 5kms every day of the challenge.
I’ve not run more than 2kms without stopping for quite some time so this really will be a challenge for me.
Day 1 starts with a treadmill run as it’s dark and stupid windy outside - one of my many issues in having asthma is that I actually struggle to breathe in strong winds - it’s like I can’t gulp it in fast enough and that causes panic which causes shortness of breath which can domino into an attack. Fortunately, with 30+ years experience as an asthmatic I’ve learned to calm my mind to avoid this panic.
If fundraising can help kids like I was not fear death every time they can’t breathe, it’s worth it every huffed and puffed step!
